The P Bass has a slightly tapered neck that gets smaller up near the headstock. The J Bass has a much more obvious taper - which makes it easier to hit fast complex changes in the lower register. This is one reason it is popular with Jazz and Funk players. The P Bass has a solid thicker neck throughout and therefore provides the meaty tone loved by countless Rock players.

I disagree, a Jazz Bass would be better for the djenty stuff IMO, especially if you are after Periphery's bass sound. P basses are kick ass though, 

It’s defined by its bridge and middle single-coil pickups. The P bass has a double cutaway like a Strat but larger and chunkier. 2009-07-11 A P Bass does its thing really well. To me, the two classic P sounds are fingers with flats and the bright rounds with a pick sound from any number of punk bands. I've always found a Jazz a lot more versatile.

Series is typical for P Basses. Parallel will have much less volume, and will be detailed and brighter like a Jazz. Jazz pickups which compete with P volumes in a passive bass won't sound like traditional/vintage J basses IME. The best option there IMO is a split single design, which is the same fundamental design as the P Bass's split single I'd say if you want a classic bass and you are only going to have one, I'd probably go with a Jazz bass. Roll off the bridge pickup and you got most of the P-bass sound and there is quite a bit of different sounds you can get blending the two pickups. basses at the heel. The gag is when you look into it, the sound of these instruments are actually very different so for me there is an underlying question of, should there even be a J bass vs P bass thing? Don’t just think “Oh I need an active bass because I hear they’re better!” That’s not the case at all. If you want to go for a more traditional kind of sound, then you can’t do better than grabbing a passive p bass or jazz. No need for active circuits.
